Before you start building your list, it’s important to understand why you need one.

Sure, you hear everyone saying that building a list is the “thing” to do, but if you don’t understand the reasons, you won’t be as motivated to do so.

While there is a lot to be said for getting to the top of the search engines and advertising to promote your business, there’s nothing like having your own list. A list is something that you control at all times. You control its size, your relationship with members, and even how much money you make.

By having a list, you are building your business on solid ground.

That’s not to say that search engine traffic isn’t wonderful and you should quit advertising. However, developing a list of leads or customers can be worth much more to you in the long run when combined with both of those methods of traffic.

The good news is that people will join your list because they view it as a lower risk than making a purchase. All they need to do is hand over their e-mail address and they are “in.” This gives you the opportunity to gain their trust and build a relationship that can lead to repeat sales down the road.

Make A One-Time Customer Into A Lifetime Customer

The difference between the customers who buy from you one time and those who buy from you multiple times is oftentimes the amount of communication they receive after their initial transaction.

Even if your customer had a great experience with you, you are likely to fall to the back of their mind if they don’t hear from you for a while. If they receive follow-up emails from you, it’s an entirely different matter. You’ll be on their mind and you will likely create a lifetime customer after you consistently deliver.

I highly recommend that you implement a system of ongoing follow-up notices to your customers. If you don’t, you’ll be out of sight and out of mind. There are many other businesses out there that are vying for your customer’s attention and they’ll get the customer that you once had.

 Know That It’s Easier To Sell To A Previous Customer

People are more likely to buy from someone they have bought from in the past, especially if it was a good experience. If you spend all your time chasing new customers, your profits are going to be far less than if you focus on keeping old customers happy and selling to them over and over again.

If you don’t have additional products to sell to your customers – send affiliate promotions for complementary products.

Use List Building To Grow Your Income

There are so many different ways that having a list can add to your bottom line. We’ve already discussed that previous customers are more likely to buy from you, but that’s not where it stops.

How to Use a Newsletter or Ezine to Build Your Business

Using a newsletter or ezine to build your business needs to be done very carefully so you don’t cross over into the world of unacceptable practices. That is not a reputation that you want for your business. Plus you don’t want to break the law and be accused of spam.

The purpose of marketing with an ezine or newsletter is to bring you more customers who might be interested in your products or services.

Sending out offers to an email list that is not targeted to the reader’s interests is a waste of time and money. For example, you wouldn’t want to email a business opportunity to a list of subscribers to a dog training ezine. You would want an email list of individuals who are interested in either starting or building a business.

You can send out millions of emails, but only those that are of interest to the reader will make a difference in whether you sell your products or services. Otherwise, all you have done is given people something to delete with all the other junk email they receive.

Here is the list of items to consider carefully when choosing how to use a newsletter or ezine to build your business:

1. Make sure your ezine or newsletter is sent on a regular basis. If you promise a monthly ezine, send it on a regular basis and do not skip a month. Make sure it is sent on the same day each month so they can expect it. Know that it might take a few emails before an individual has a need for what you are offering but if you are regular with your emails, they may buy your products or services eventually. Earning your list’s trust will help you make sales.

2. Make sure when using a newsletter or ezine to build your business that the information you are sending to your list is important and not useless information. Make sure the customer is receiving something they are interested in so it will be useful for them. Show your prospects that they mean more to you than just dollar signs and give them more in your emails than just trying to sell them something every time. They will be looking forward to reading about the interesting things in your newsletter and not necessarily feeling pressured to buy. 3. Try to keep the videos, photos, and logos to a small amount in your emails. There are filters attached to many email servers that will block the email before it reaches the inbox for this very thing. Make it personal to the reader without all the expensive flashy items. 4. Give your customers a contact point where they can talk to you about anything. This might be a forum, blog, or content area. The important thing is to keep yourself aware of what they really want and need from you.

Understand that not all emails will bring a sale even if you follow the advice listed above.

They need to know the information you are sending is factual and trustworthy or it will not be read. These things are very important to the average email reader who is willing to spend money on your products or services.
