Do you know what phishing spam is? If you
don't, you may be in for trouble.
Most people who have spent a lot of time
online probably know what phishing spam is.
Phishing spam is e-mail sent by people who
want to steal your financial information or your identity.
The most common phishing spam looks like
they are from real companies like eBay, PayPal, US Bank and many
others.
The Federal Reserve offers the following
advice:
- Don't be intimidated by threats to your
account status and never click on links in a suspect e-mail.
- If an e-mail seems legitimate, go to the
company's Web site by typing in the address yourself.
- If you fall victim to phishing, call
your bank and place fraud alerts with credit bureaus.
- Report suspicious e-mail at
www.consumer.gov/idtheft
or call 1-877-IDTHEFT.
Here is a good resource to the
Anti-Phishing Working Group with some additional tips.
